Top sprinter S Dhanalakshmi has been ruled out of the upcoming Commonwealth Games after failing a doping test while national record three-time jumper Aishwarya Babu has also tested positive for a banned substance, sources said on Wednesday. Dhanalakshmi, 24, who was named to India’s 36-member athletics squad for the Birmingham CWG, came back positive for a banned steroid in an overseas doping test by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) of the World Athletics.
“Dhanalakshmi tested positive in a doping test conducted by the AIU. She will not be going to Birmingham CWG,” a source with knowledge of the development told PTI on condition of anonymity. Dhanalakshmi was named to the CWG team for the 100m and the 4x100m relay team along with Dutee Chand, Hima Das and Srabani Nanda.

She was also named in India’s squad for the ongoing world championships in Eugene, USA, but failed to make it to the showpiece, reportedly due to visa issues.

Dhanalakshmi had clocked a personal best time of 22.89 seconds to win gold in the 200m at the Qosanov Memorial track meet on June 26. She had become only the third Indian woman to run under-23 after national record holder Saraswati Saha (22.82s) and Hima Das (22.88s). Aishwarya, 24,’s dope sample taken by NADA officials during the National Interstate Athletics Championships in Chennai last month also tested positive.

“Triple jumper Aishwarya Babu’s sample taken during the National Interstate Championships came back positive,” the source said. Aishwarya had broken the national triple jump record with a mind-boggling effort of 14.14m to become the undisputed star of the Senior National Interstate Athletics Championships (June 10-14) in Chennai.
