MTN conquers 2021 to promote eSports and video games in Ghana
Registration for the 2021 edition of MTN Conquest opened from July 13 to 17, 2021, after which the qualifying rounds took place at partner gaming centers in Accra, Kumasi and Koforidua. 32 players for FIFA and 12 players for Gran Turismo will compete for the grand prize.
The playoff and round of 16 matches took place on Saturday, July 24, 2021 at Esports Academy in Haatso, Accra. Four of Ghana’s top FIFA21 players faced off against their male counterparts. The quarter-finals until the grand final will be played on July 31, 2021 at the same venue.
Commenting on the 2021 edition of MTN Conquest, MTN Ghana Marketing Director Mr. Noel Kojo-Ganson indicated that the digital age is changing the way sport is played and e-sports and video games have become the niche for people who do not have the capabilities to engage in physical sport activities but would like to have fun, relax or for commercial gain.
He said: “As MTN strives to ensure that everyone enjoys the benefits of modern connected living, we believe that the Games play an important role in the human development ecosystem as they encourage interaction, learning and discipline. Even though we use digital tools to engage in business, educate ourselves and undertake financial intermediation, we also need to take the time to play games while improving our skills and lives. MTN Cconquest was launched to keep our youth engaged in eSports. as an alternative way to have fun and also earn an income, ”he added.
MTN Conquest 2021 will be broadcast on MTN Ghana social media. There are prizes for the audience to follow, engage, and watch the live stream.
The first edition of MTN Conquest was held in Accra and Kumasi in 2019 with a pot prize of 24,000 Ghs, the biggest ever in esports tournaments in Ghana. There were over 760 players who took part in FIFA19 and Mortal Kombat matches with over 500 additional spectators at the venues. It was broadcast for the Facebook and YouTube audiences of MTN Ghana and Conquest.
Globally, video games have become the daily way of life for many people of different demographics. They spend a lot of time playing with their family and friends in friendlies and tournaments. This experience was reinforced at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to industry reports, the video game industry is larger than the film, music and streaming industries combined, on a global scale. An amount of $ 69.85 was spent on video games in Ghana as an e-commerce spend by category in 2020 according to the Digital 2021 Ghana report by WeAreSocial and HootSuite. This is a growth of 40% compared to the previous year.
