IE Varsity High School Football Previews for Thursday, August 18 Games – Press Enterprise
Here’s a look at some of the best Inland High School football games happening on Thursday, August 18.
The records in parentheses are from the 2021 season.
ETIWANDA (12-1) AT AQUINAS (10-6), 7 p.m.
IE University Information: The marquee match on the opening night of the season features two teams starting in the Top 10 of the IE Varsity pre-season rankings. Etiwanda, ranked seventh, has reappeared in recent seasons under Nick Baiz. The Eagles fired several key players from last year’s team, but the defense falls to linebackers Mike and Michai Harrison (73 combined tackles last year). Junior wide receiver Jaden Landrum is a player to watch on offense. Aquinas, ranked No. 8 to start this season, fires several starters from last year’s championship team, including senior quarterback Dre Robles (2,210 yards, 20 TDs) and sophomore running back JoJo Solis (2,553 scrimmage yards, 37 touchdowns). Etiwanda beat Aquinas 20-6 in last season’s opener but Solis did not play in that game due to injury.
TEMECULA VALLEY (10-4) AT COLONY (8-7), 7 PM
IE University Information: This game features a pair of programs that advanced to the CIF South Section title games last season. Colony won the Division 9 championship, while Temecula Valley finished second in Division 6. Temecula Valley should have a solid defense this year, led by senior linebackers Jake Sinz and Lucas Valencia, who combined for 246 tackles last season . Main receiver Dominic Paris could become a great playmaker on the offensive side of the ball. Colony’s force is in the trenches, with seniors Deijon Laffitte and Savian Faucette leading the way. Another player to watch for the Titans is wide receiver/defensive back Donovan English.
LA HABRA (6-6) AT UPLAND (6-6), 7 PM
IE University Information: Upland and La Habra are familiar opponents, having faced each other four times in the season opener since 2017. Upland have a 3-1 advantage in those games, including a 13-0 win last season. Upland will be looking for another strong performance on the defensive end with senior linebackers Vincent Macaluso (82 tackles) and Brendan Ash (82 tackles) leading the way. Ricky Allen rushed for 774 yards last season, and the senior should be the best offensive player. La Habra’s offense is led by senior quarterback Justin Gil (1,846 yards, 22 TDs) and wide receiver Jacob Apodaca (666 yards, 10 TDs). Senior linebacker Gabriel Medel led the Highlanders with 86 tackles last season.
CHINO HILLS (7-6) AGAINST. GLENDORA (11-1) AT CITRUS COLLEGE, 7 PM
IE University Information: Chino Hills is getting another restart under Keland Johnson, who is the program’s fourth head coach in as many seasons. The Huskies should be strong on the defensive end of the ball with their top four returning tackles. Senior linebacker Kade Musser had 123 tackles last season, and senior winger Zane Poulter had 82 tackles and six sacks. Senior linebacker Hunter Corbin is another player to watch, and he was a reliable running back from short range last season. Glendora is led by senior running back Zachary Ford (680 yards, nine TDs) and two-way senior lineman Dominic Rausch.
