What to watch

(3) Notre Dame to (25) North Carolina State

Watch on ACC Network Friday, stream on ACC Network Extra Saturday and Sunday.

ACC play begins this weekend with a Top 25 series spotlighting the action. Notre Dame (9-1) is the defending conference champion and travels to Raleigh to face NC State (9-4), which reached the College World Series last season. This weekend’s series lost some shine last week when the Wolfpack were swept at home by Northeastern, but they remain a dangerous opponent for the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame has excelled at run prevention this season and comes in the weekend rankings second in the nation in ERA team (1.41) and first in the nation in fielding percentage (.992). If he can maintain that level of throwing and defense against the powerful NC State roster, he should keep rolling. If, however, Tommy White (.456/.516/.965, 9 HR) and company can get the offense humming again, the Wolfpack has what it takes to antagonize the Irish. A subplot to watch this weekend is NC State second baseman JT Jarrett versus his father Link Jarrett, Notre Dame’s head coach.

(10) State of Florida at Wake Forest
Watch on ACC Network on Fridays, Bally Sports on Saturdays and Sundays.

This weekend’s series at David F. Couch Ballpark features an intriguing matchup with contrasting styles. Florida State (8-4) is led by one of the best rotations in the country, while Wake Forest (12-1) presents a powerful formation. The Seminoles’ roster and Demon Deacons’ pitching staff shouldn’t be overlooked and both units have talented prospects, but the game of the weekend will be Florida State pitchers versus Wake Forest batters. Left-handers Parker Messick (2-0, 1.80) and Bryce Hubbart (3-0, 0.96) and right-hander Ross Dunn (0-0, 1.46) have been outstanding for Florida State, but this weekend end marks their first test drive of the year. The Demon Deacons are hitting .360/.471/.629 as a team but have yet to face the Seminoles pitching staff. Jake Reinisch (.459/.588/.784) leads Wake Forest at bat and preseason All-American third baseman Brock Wilken (.333/.426/.569) is one of the best hitters in the conference. The game between the Florida State pitcher and Wake Forest batter will likely decide the series.

College Podcast: Week 4 College Baseball Preview

Teddy Cahill and Geoff Pontes provide insight into Week 4 around college baseball.

Southern California at (15) UCLA
Stream on Pac-12 Network Plus.

Pac-12 play begins this weekend with several intriguing matchups, highlighted by this rivalry showdown in Los Angeles. USC (9-2) is off to a strong start to the season, despite only facing one team (Santa Clara) with a winning record. We’ll learn a lot more about the Trojans this weekend as they make the trip across town to Jackie Robinson Stadium. UCLA (9-4) is coming off a 2-1 weekend at the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic in Houston, where the Bruins finished the weekend with a win over No. 1 Texas. They have a very young squad, but more than looked to the role of Pac-12 title contender last weekend. Unsurprisingly, it all starts on the mound for the Bruins, with a rotation of Jake Brooks (2-1, 0.90), Max Rajcic (1-1, 3.38) and Kelly Austin (1-0, 0.52 ). USC hitters will have their hands full against this trio.

(19) Gonzaga at Long Beach State

Bad weather in the Midwest has led the Zags and Dirtbags to rearrange their schedules and instead of playing Missouri and Nebraska respectively, they will meet at Blair Field. The short notice on which the series reunited means that it unfortunately won’t air, but it’s still worth watching. Gonzaga (10-2) entered the Top 25 this week and is on an eight-game winning streak, including a sweep at Oklahoma State last weekend. Long Beach State (5-6) last weekend snapped a six-game skid with a series win over North Dakota State and beat Pepperdine on Tuesday. Getting out of the funk was important, but a series win here would be a big boost before Big West play begins. The races will probably be there this weekend.

Michigan to Louisville
Stream on ACC Network Extra.

As ACC play begins for most teams this weekend, Louisville (9-3) has one final week of non-conference action and will host Michigan (7-5). Since going 1-2 on opening weekend in a tournament in South Florida, the Cardinals have been back on track and riding a six-game winning streak this weekend. This weekend, however, should be a big step up from Dartmouth and Akron, their final two opponents of the weekend. Michigan has had its ups and downs this year, going 1-2 at both the State Farm Showdown in Arlington, Texas, and the Keith LeClair Classic in Greenville, North Carolina, so it’s also a great weekend. -end for the Wolverines. Both teams have an opportunity this weekend to add what should be a strong series win to their playoff resumes and get a boost before heading to conference play.
