GTA Online Reportedly Abandoned Game Mode Due To Police Brutality Issues
. Last update: July 27, 2022
New report claims Rockstar Games has canned a game mode in development for GTA Online, amid public outcry over police brutality in 2020.
New details have started to emerge both about the upcoming GTA 6 and how developer Rockstar Games has shaken up its working culture behind the scenes.
While we know more than ever about the two protagonists of GTA 6, as well as where they’re going, there’s also been news about how the development of GTA Online has changed over the past few years.
GTA Online received its last update on July 26.
Rockstar reportedly shelving GTA Online ‘Cops ‘n’ Crooks’ mode
A Bloomberg report from July 27 revealed that Rockstar had canceled a new mode they were working on for GTA Online called Cops ‘n’ Crooks.
The mode was intended to be “a variation of the children’s game where players organize themselves into teams of good guys and bad guys” that was scrapped by senior executives who were “concerned about how the narrative might be interpreted at a times of heightened skepticism and distrust of American police” in the summer of 2020.
Although the game mode was only shelved back then, the company has no plans for the mode to ever return.
The report also highlighted Rockstar’s internal culture shift by adding more producers, converting contracts to full-time employees, and adding new mental health benefits.
Although the game mode never saw the light of day and GTA 6 is still years away from an official release, there is still plenty of content for GTA Online players to experience.
