College football picks, schedule: predictions against the spread, odds for key games today in week 0

The vast majority of FBS’ 131 teams will begin their 2022 seasons in about seven days, but for 17% of college football’s Premier League, play begins in Week 0 with games scattered from as far west as Honolulu, Hawaii, to the far east. like Dublin, Ireland. Since these contests are scattered across six time zones, there will be games to watch all day long until late at night.

Nebraska vs. Northwestern — that aforementioned game in Ireland — is Saturday’s high point as the only contest between not just Power Five opponents, but conference foes as well. The Cornhuskers will be looking for a big first W to kick off the season with coach Scott Frost in the hot seat, while the Wildcats are looking for a rebound season after a 3-9 finish in 2021 (with six straight losses to end the season ) disappointed the North West faithful.

While winning is all that matters for the leaderboard, we do care how these games will play out from an odds perspective. Be sure to stick with CBS Sports throughout the day for college football coverage from kickoff. Let’s take a look at our expert picks for the best of the 11 games in Week 0.

Nebraska v Northwestern (Ireland)

Featured game | Northwestern Wildcats vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers

12:30 | Fox, fuboTV (Try for free) — If I bet on the spread, I take Northwestern and the points – but not because I have so much faith in the Wildcats. It’s that I don’t really believe in the fact that there are many points scored in this match. Nebraska has made plenty of changes on the offensive end of the ball, and chances are the Cornhuskers will be on a limited slate in the first game of the season. I also expect the North West defense to improve as it is part of the program’s DNA. Even if it doesn’t, and the Nebraska offense is firing full throttle, we can still rely on the Northwestern offense not to do too much damage. Less is better. Choose: Under 49.5 –Tom Fornelli

Featured game | Illinois Fighting Illini vs. Wyoming Cowboys

4 p.m. | Big Ten Network, fuboTV (Try for free) — The Cowboys have been decimated by starts, including catcher Isaiah Neyor. Additionally, the entire left side of the offensive line needs to be rebuilt. The Illini, on the other hand, have an established transfer quarterback in Tommy DeVito who won’t be shocked by anything the Cowboys throw at him. The combination of DeVito and players with established offensive skills will force Wyoming into a shootout…and he’s not designed for that. Pick: Illinois -10 — Barrett Sallee

Featured game | Florida Atlantic Owls vs. Charlotte 49ers

7 p.m. | CBS Sports Network, CBSSports.com, CBS Sports appThe Owls and 49ers are bringing new defensive staffs to campus in an effort to bolster units that have placed in the bottom half of Conference USA programs in scoring defense. FAU scored 38 points with ease the last time these two teams met, while Charlotte is expected to take another step under senior quarterback Chris Reynolds and return to the 30 points per game the team achieved in 2020. Especially in week 0, expect this one to turn into a shootout. Choose: Over 59.0 –Shehan Jeyarajah

Featured game | Hawaii Rainbow Warriors vs. Vanderbilt Commodores

10:30 p.m. | CBS Sports Network, CBSSports.com, CBS Sports appGet to know Mike Wright’s name because the Vanderbilt quarterback will be one of the most pleasant surprises of the 2022 season. The problem? He won’t get much help at Vanderbilt. Timmy Chang has taken over the Rainbow Warriors and will announce his presence with a bang – a stellar offensive performance that will recall his time playing quarterback for Hawaii. This will force the Commodores into a shootout – a shootout that Wright & Co. can narrowly win thanks to the caller’s dual threat ability. Pick: Hawaii +6.5 — Barrett Sallee
