Thirty years after its release, the sound of the YM3438 – the FM sound chip on the Mega Drive – still resonates dynamically and robustly. Although the Mega Drive was state of the art at the time, it could only generate six tones simultaneously, which meant it was much more restrictive than regular commercial music production. In an interview with Billboard Japan, Masato shared his process of creating music in such a limited environment.

“From a vertical point of view, only six notes could be played together, including drums, chords and melody. It wasn’t about chords anymore, it was about expressing the music with just those six notes, so I only used six notes to compose in MIDI, ”explains Masato. “I assigned two notes to the hi-hat and the bass drum, the third to the melody, and I used the other three to generate chords. It probably sounds restrictive now, but that was just what was given back then, so I worked on the assumption that in-game music could only generate six notes. I created it purely from a ‘This is all I can really use’ point of view. So the challenge was how good the music could be with just a good melody, a good bassline and a minimum of drums.

The resulting music for Sonic the hedgehog is a densely packed soundtrack of pop music from a variety of genres that precisely enhances the many different areas of the game. What’s remarkable is how the game console played full-fledged funk music. , with “Spring Yard Zone” from the first title being the most notable example. The bass emitted by the FM sound chip is clearly defined and three-dimensional, affirming their presence with a distinctive and bouncy quality. The way they bond to the strong, lean drums is also flawless, as Thundercat commented on the song on Red Bull’s. Digging in the carts: “It was like one of my first experiences with funk, I think, honestly.” This example of a Japanese pop artist’s influence on the contemporary funk scene through video games is a fascinating phenomenon.

Masato describes his first impression of Sonic the hedgehog – which was still in production when the soundtrack was created – as being cinematic. “When I first saw Sonic, I thought the graphics were revolutionary for the time. Side scrolling, really fast, and there were storyboards for different areas, ”he recalls. “And I was like, ‘I want to make music like it’s a movie.’ Before making my debut as DREAMS COME TRUE I had a long history of composing music and songs for visual works and commercials. I loved movies and always wanted to do movie scores so I was started to think about Sonic the hedgehog like a movie and started working on the music as if it were the soundtrack accompanying the story of Sonicis the great adventure. MTV was in its prime at the time, and many movies had theme songs, like Free of any tie and Lightning dance. Every song [in the soundtracks] has been a success. I wanted to Sonic being like that, that’s how I wrote every song for it.

Years after the game was released, Sonic the hedgehog has been adapted for the big screen. Masato’s cinematic gems in the Sonic the hedgehog soundtracks have retained their particular brilliance over the years, just like the films from which they were inspired.

Those who have known Masato Nakamura through Sonic the hedgehog might want to check out his band’s latest song DREAMS COME TRUE titled “Tsugino Seno! De – ON THE GREEN HILL-.” As the title suggests, the track is a majestic pop act inspired by and using the original music of the game, a rich cross-collaboration that only he could achieve, 30 years after the game’s birth.

DREAMS’s latest song COME TRUE and Masato’s tracks for Sonic the Hedgehog can be heard here.

While COVID-19 has seen the closure of actual sporting events, the esports industry has continued to grow, as millions of people have logged in to events online from their homes.

Global investors, brands and the media are all paying attention. Insider Intelligence estimates that there will be more than 26 million monthly esports viewers by the end of 2021, up 11.4% from the previous year.

The change was fueled in part by mainstream celebrities like Michael Jordan, Drake, and Marshmello, who championed the industry, increasing coverage of traditional outlets like ESPN and the meteoric rise of Fortnite.

The industry isn’t the most diverse in terms of gender – with women making up just 16% of executives at top gaming companies, according to a report by esports organization Fnatic. Insider recently compiled a list of the top 23 women in gaming, esports, and streaming.

Esports is steadily growing in popularity and revenue in Europe, with FIFA, League of Legends and Call of Duty among the most popular titles, and it could be worth $ 800 million by 2023, according to Deloitte’s analysis.

Insider has asked venture capitalists in Europe to each name two esports companies that they say will explode. Check them out below:

There has been an exponential growth in the video game industry and it’s pretty impressive how much progress is being made from one generation of games to the next. The video game industry continues to introduce exciting new intellectual properties that can be reproduced in larger series, but some of the most popular games belong to established gaming franchises that players have been following for years.

RELATED: The 10 oldest gaming franchises still active, listed by age

The video game industry has no shortage of surprises and franchises that were considered dead may return unexpectedly, but the reverse is also true and successful franchises can suddenly be forgotten and fall unjustly into obscurity.

ten Breath Of Fire was a unique take on fantasy RPGs and hero archetypes

Breath of fire 3

The 90s were a golden period for cutting edge RPG series. Capcom Breath of fire games for the Super Nintendo weren’t as popular as Final fantasy Where Dragon Quest, but they led to a satisfying series with a dedicated following who were able to move on to the PlayStation.

The Breath of fire The games draw inspiration from many standard fantasy RPG conventions, but are a breath of fresh air due to their transformational mechanics and perspective on a post-apocalyptic world. Breath of Fire V was back in 2003 and although a sixth entry took place in 2016, it was a mobile business that never left Japan.

9 Dino Crisis is a survival horror series that still leaves fans hungry

It seems like every major video game developer and publisher has dabbled in the survival horror craze in hopes of delivering the next one. Resident Evil. There has been a little less pressure from Capcom since they resident Evil fall back, but the same brilliant minds were responsible for Dinosaur crisis survival horror series.

With the slew of resident Evil remakes that happened, fans expressed the same treatment for Dinosaur crisis. With the success of the Jurassic World movies, there has never been a better time for horror based on dinosaurs.

8 Viewtiful Joe Is Chaotic Beat-‘Em-Up Action With A Conscious Sense Of Humor

Gamecube Viewtiful Joe 2 Fight Video Games

The beat-’em-up genre of video games is reminiscent of arcade classics and the era of 16-bit game consoles, but there have still been franchises that find ways to make this genre work in a modern context. .

RELATED: 10 Nintendo franchises killed (and why)

The Joe the spectator the games were a welcome change of pace on Nintendo GameCube and the series received a lot of attention through two core games and a cross-platform combat spin-off, purely for the wacky absurdity of Joe the spectator to shut up. Beat-’em-up tracks remain a polarizing genre, but it’s the characters and the sense of humor that make Joe the spectator come out.

7 Power Stone is the life boost the fighting genre needs

Dreamcast Power Stone 2 Combat Video Game

One of the most saturated video game genres is fighting titles, many of which have reached the point where they are just foundational series that keep producing new releases. The Power stone the games were part of the most satisfying Dreamcast versions and it’s such a shame that the wacky franchise that didn’t take itself too seriously seems to be as dead as the Dreamcast.

Creative environments, weapons and characters, with four player action, made Power stone stand out from the crowd. Its energy is perpetuated in the Super Smash Bros. games, but it’s not the same.

6 F-Zero is Nintendo’s fast-paced futuristic racing series with an indefinitely stuck engine

F-Zero Gameplay SNES

The F-Zero Games have been an important part of Nintendo history and they have been represented across the Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, GameCube, as well as many Nintendo handheld systems and even the arcade. The F-Zero represent a more hardcore style of racing games than what is provided in the Mario kart series, but these titles turned out to be more accessible and clearly left F-Zero no place to belong.

Curiously, the F-Zero the games received a greater number of followers due to the presence of Captain Falcon in the Super Smash Bros. games, but it deserves to go back to its racing roots.

5 Clock Tower Gothic Tense Horror Is More Appropriate Than Ever

There is a lot of iconic survival horror series and now that it looks like fans finally have a new silent Hill game (fingers crossed), it’s time to Clock tower receive the same treatment. Clock tower produced four strong games, but has remained absent from modern survival horror conversations even though the series debuted on the Super Nintendo and predates Resident Evil.

The Clock tower the games are dark, psychologically trying and are inspired by the films of Dario Argento. They also feature an intimidating serial killer known as the Scissorman who chases the player every turn.

4 Onimusha’s samurai superlatives deserve a comeback

Onimusha is a defining title for the PlayStation 2 and the first console game to sell over a million copies. It may be difficult to correctly grasp the sword cutting samurai aesthetic, but the Onimusha titles excel in this regard.

Onimusha was conceived as a trilogy, but a fourth main title, Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, came out in 2006 — along with various spinoffs — since the franchise was so popular. There has since been a newer browser title and a remastered version of the original game in the series, but for a franchise that has been one of PlayStation 2’s most successful endeavors, it’s surprising that there is. had such deference to the property since then.

3 The Earthbound / Mother series contains some of the greatest hearts and souls of all Nintendo properties

Ness visiting Twoson market

There is of course something to be said for a series that ends on a high note and doesn’t dilute unnecessarily through endless sequels. The Mother RPG series, more commonly known as Tied to the earth outside of Japan, represent three of the most creative RPG experiences.

The games reflect a more modern, urban aesthetic, but also a staggering level of layered storytelling that spans a wide range of characters and time periods. Fans couldn’t even get an official localized version of Mother 3, it is therefore unlikely that a Mother 4 would never materialize. However, a localized version of the original Mother The game finally made it to the North American Wii U eShop 26 years after the original’s release, so never say never.

2 The world is ready for more traditional banjo-kazooie platform chaos

Banjo-Kazooie Platform game

Banjo-Kazooie and its sequel were two of Rare’s most famous titles on the Nintendo 64 and many see them as the pinnacle of the 3D platforming before they fell into monotonous “collect-athons” territory. There have been some efforts to relaunch Banjo-Kazooie, but all in a non-traditional way that moves away from the platform structure that helped the original games succeed.

1 Earthworm Jim was ahead of his time and still holds tons of potential

SNES Play Earthworm Jim Fridge and Cow

Jim earthworm made big waves during the era of 16-bit platform games with its stimulating action-platform formula, but also a universe that felt truly unique, unpredictable and avant-garde. Jim earthworm made a few unsuccessful attempts to get back into a 3D context, but the series still spawned an animated series and has a very loud crowd.

Enough time has passed for a traditional 2D Jim earthworm side-scroller could work incredibly well. The rest of the gaming industry has finally caught up with the series’ creeping weirdness. There are now more directions than ever to take the odd series. There is supposedly a Jim Earthworm 4 in the original 2D style in development exclusively for the upcoming Intellivision Amico console, but given the platform’s troubled history, it will be hard to get excited about until its release.

The most agile game developers borrow. Like Shakespeare himself, they dig into revered titles created by the Old Guard and grab whatever is useful to them. They wonder “How can we make a game as inventive as Publication date, as artistic as Zelda and also taking that The last of us? “

The latest title from Shanghai developer Pixpil, to the east, is a triumph that extends the standard for the development of independent games; it masterfully combines popular tropes of older titles and genres without feeling hackneyed and outdated. It’s no small feat, but to the east passes the test with flying colors (and pixels).

An unlikely pair – and an unlikely weapon

to the east follows two main (and very endearing) protagonists, John and Sam, who, unlike their names, are quite unique: John is a laconic blue-collar digger who wears a flannel and wields his trusty frying pan like a weapon. Sam is an exuberant young girl with shiny white hair and supernatural abilities. Together, they not only make a terrific fighting duo, but also a father-daughter type relationship (they’re not actually bonded) that grips your heart at many points in your game. They make a great pair, and when they’re not taking down monsters, the adorable Sam usually inhales something delicious that John has cooked on his handy frying pan.

As the mysteries unfold to the east, it becomes clearer that Sam and John’s world is deteriorating. There are hints of a declining population as a deadly miasma engulfs forests, towns and distant towns. While the game does include apocalypse footage from classic video games – burnt houses, looted shops, and collapsed bridges – to the east does a better job than most headlines at revealing information about upcoming disasters. I felt tense during my game; the plot-related dialogue shrouds in enough mystery to leave players guessing at the calamity to come.

to the east skillfully distinguishes between adorable and really dark. While the game has too many cutscenes, the most important ones play out like off-Broadway drama; there is tension, pain and loss. It’s especially shocking when this darkness appears in pixelated form. When characters uncover hard truths, profess feelings, or show compassion, you can see it in their faces: Pixpil proves that you don’t need high-res graphics to convey genuine emotion.

Deep details keep players engaged

Pixpil’s small team has managed to incorporate incredible detail into every part of to the eastwithout sacrificing quality in other aspects like writing or character development. Each pixel projects color onto the Switch’s limited screen. It is as if every stitch has been designed with the utmost care. As John and Sam walk through dark dungeons or the bright, Japanese streets of New Dam City, I feel like I’m part of their history. What interesting shops were waiting for us around the corner? What monsters were going to try to tear me apart while I smashed them with my frying pan?

It’s clear that Pixpil has put a lot of time and effort into creating something visually appealing. When I think back to the handheld Zelda games like The Minish cap or even the recent one Link’s Awakening redo, I realize that to the east went beyond the artistic prowess of Nintendo. This does not mean that these famous Zelda the titles are not impressive – they are, but to the eastThe team managed to capture my sense of adventure even more than these titles. Each character sprite has distinctive traits, like a woolly beard or purple hair, each building embraces the misfortune of an impoverished city, advertisements stuck to cement, and air conditioners sunk into the windows. In a way, to the eastThe visuals make me want to ditch my DC apartment and travel to these seedy cities, even when they’re on the verge of falling.

Some awkward musical choices don’t spoil the masterful sound design

A sound design masterclass is integrated into this visual gem. Dialogue bubbles buzz and chirp playfully, John’s frying pan kicks hard against the electrified slugs. Even Sam’s muffled footsteps in a quiet room are carefully crafted. The sounds are physical and add another thoughtful dimension to to the east.

It took me a few hours with to the east enjoy his music. I didn’t like repetitive synth tunes at first because they seemed a bit lazy, but over time some of the more hidden elements of the music in the game jumped out at me, like a piano accompaniment that I had not noticed or a guitar stroke that I enjoyed. Transitions between cutscenes often meant cutting one piece and starting another; just as I was starting to enjoy a track, a cutscene or a change of location interrupted it. I expected more musical flair and originality from a game that exudes quality elsewhere, but that satisfied me enough.

It’s games like to the east this remind me that it is okay to leave the PS5 idle next to the TV. It’s so tempting these days to dedicate all of my games to a badass new console, but indie diamonds like this prove how much story can be told with so little processing power. It renews my confidence in the originality of the game when a team like Pixpil can produce something on par with the big pennies from the big studios. Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft are expected to rate games like to the east – they will have a lot of ingenuity to borrow.

According to a recent market analysis, the gaming industry will grow to four times the current volume by 2030. This will be impressive growth that is expected to boost investor profits. Saudi Arabia is one of the most emerging countries in terms of investors, whether private or public. Its high volume of investments helps to develop the gaming market in the Middle East region.

New projects to develop the gaming sector in Saudi Arabia

The rise of the electronic games market in Saudi Arabia goes hand in hand with the growth of gaming platforms and sites dedicated to secure real money betting such as 7alalcasino.com: this is one of the most popular and trusted sites for active casino games. It is important to point out that casino games cover a significant portion of the overall industry revenue.

Saudi Arabia recently launched new initiatives to encourage the growth of online gaming. Among the latest innovative measures is the Game Mode project of the Communication and Information Technologies Commission (CITC). This project aims to help telecom operators to engage in secure competition. Other initiatives include the work of Telcos which provides players with great experience, high level market transparency and key data on market trends to assist investors.

Improving the online experience and telecommunications is the key to success: this is why the Game Mode Initiative includes the launch of a special award for the best video game service provider. As you can see, the Saudi gaming market is booming like never before, with a growth rate of 22%, one of the highest in the world. In addition, the market will develop in the field of eSports in the next two or three years.

Reasons for the boom in the gaming market in Saudi Arabia

If you are new to the world of electronic games, you might be wondering why it works so well as an industry. There are several factors that can explain the real growth of the market, but one of the most relevant factors is that the pandemic has accelerated the penetration of the Internet into people’s daily lives. Frequent shutdowns result in longer periods of time at home, which means more time spent on internet entertainment and free time activities, including video games.

Another relevant factor that drives the gaming market is the introduction of 5G connections among the population. Thanks to the faster connection to the Internet, more and more people are feeling encouraged to try digital games. Finally, it must be considered that around two-thirds of the Saudi population are under the age of 30 and that young people are more likely to spend their time in video games than the elderly.

The gaming market in Saudi Arabia is mostly mobile driven due to the country’s urban population. Interestingly, the video game appears to be roughly equally popular with men and women. Despite all expectations, average video game users are console gamers reaching 41% of total users (mobile users are slightly lower than PC users, 32% and 33% respectively).

The most played games by Saudi gamers and why they play them

This investigation conducted by Consumer Insight reveals that a very high percentage of Saudi gamers (around 39%) enjoy playing puzzle games on mobile. But there’s more to the gaming trends of the Saudi online population: Sports games cover 34% of total most played games. This genre comes second on mobile after puzzle games. Third place is reserved for racing games, while adventure games deserve fourth place.

Beyond these more popular genres, there are also casual genres and esports (these are more popular in Saudi Arabia than other MENA countries).

Why do Saudi gamers choose to play puzzle and sports games more often than adventure games? One reason is that people need a simple brain-boosting hobby, but another reason is that the average gamer craves the thrill of competition. Due to recent blockages, many players feel the need to get away from everyday life.

We should also mention that many people feel lonely and are looking for social games to make new friends and share their gaming experience. Several gamers play video games to earn money. Real money games are also an important part of the video game market as they help in the growth of the market’s revenue.

In conclusion, gamers should be proud of their gaming activity. Recent studies point out that gamers have a more positive outlook on life and better problem-solving skills than non-gamers. Surprisingly, players have a better chance of getting a good job thanks to the many brain skills they develop through video games.

It seems like playing video games is not only fun, but it’s also a great way to improve foundational skills for life.

Part of the reason why anime is considered such a diverse and creative medium of entertainment is the way in which he is able to engage in such extremes when it comes to his subject matter. There’s an animated series for just about everything at this point, and there are several genres to meet both niche and mainstream audiences.

RELATED: Top 10 Anime Heroes With The Most Blood On Their Hands

There are certainly softer, kid-friendly animated series out there, but the medium also has a reputation for bloody and graphic he can get with his representations of violence. Some anime push the boundaries in this department, but there are others that really go for it.

ten Devilman Crybaby turns graphic violence into an art form

Go to Nagai Evil man The franchise has grown into one of the foundational horror series that tackles a metamorphosis narrative about the corrupting nature of power. Devilman crybaby is the most recent version of the property and Masaaki Yuasa uses his fluid, model-defying art style to amplify the awe-inspiring violence that fills the series.

There is endless carnage as Akira’s monstrous form tears bodies apart indiscriminately, but the animation and use of color makes him almost beautiful in nature. Devilman crybaby justifies its excessive nature by linking its themes to a larger commentary on violence and responsibility.

9 Berserk is an iconic Dark Fantasy series that pushes the limits with its extremes

Kentaro miura Berserk is an exceptional dark fantasy series that understands how to blend the eclectic sensibilities of the genre in a way that is both fantastical and spooky. Miura’s magnificent works of art are a major selling point for Berserk and there are beautiful splash-proof panels that highlight excessive gore thanks to Guts’ exaggerated blade.

There have been several animated adaptations of Berserk who are trying to properly capture the magic of the series. None of them lack violence, and entire episodes can be devoted to Guts’ rhythmic destruction of demons.

8 Higurashi: When They Cry unleashes explosions of brutality that transcend its genre

Higurashi: when they cry has become one of the most surprising anime franchises of the decade and it’s proof that a book should never be judged by its cover. The different Higurashi: when they cry adopt a colorful, kid-friendly art style with adorable characters.

All of this to keep audiences lowering their guard so the graphic murders and time loop shenanigans hit even harder. Higurashi is consumed by gruesome murders, but these characters reach psychotic heights and the rooms are covered in blood. Due to the cyclical structure of the series, these deaths are also seen repeatedly.

7 Genocyber is a neglected body horror classic from the 1990s

Anime Genocyber Monster Carnage

The The 90s are a golden time for some of the most graphic and violent experiences in the anime industry. Genocyber is a five-part OVA adventure that goes beyond and makes disturbing body horror its priority. Genocyber The plot is surprisingly prescient, and delves into a future dystopia led by companies seeking to obtain a new genetic and psychic weapon, the Genocyber. Genocyber combines humans, animals and machines, which lends itself to very memorable visuals. This accomplishes a lot in its short span, and every installment has at least one incredible centerpiece.

6 Elfen Lied explores deadly powers and doesn’t shy away from bloody consequences

Anime Elfen Lied Bullets

Most of the time, the aggressive violence in the anime is caused by excessive guns, but series like Elf lied explore the horrors of the days when supernatural powers were the cause of bloodshed. Lucy is a biological weapon with extreme telekinetic abilities that allow her to detonate targets with her mind. Lucy loses her memory and fits precariously into society, but her inherent powers are revealed in graphic ways. Elf lied succeeds with how alarmed Lucy is about the destruction she can cause as well as her search for her purpose in this world.

5 Another examines generational violence through a deadly curse

Anime another blood umbrella

Violence for violence often sounds superficial, but Another is a clever hybrid of horror and mystery that uses the brutal nature of its tragedies to only add greater urgency to the mystery at the center of it all.

Kouichi Sakakibara, a new student transferred to Yomiyama North Middle School, slowly learns about the school’s dark past and the death of a young girl in the 1970s. Kouichi becomes the target of this violent curse and a wave of murder and death. bloodshed begins to plague the school again.

4 Corpse Party: Tortured Souls unleashes a haunted school full of evil

Corpse Day begins in a traditional way where a small group of students meet at school to scare each other with ghost stories, only to be taken to a haunted educational institution. These students are completely helpless and forced to fend off a whole school of demons and vengeful spirits. The anime is incredibly gory, but it really does bring a sense of hopelessness to these lost students.

3 Parasyte uses alien invasion to dissect humanity in horrific ways

Anime Parasyte The Host Parasite Maxim

The anime is chock-full of series where an unpretentious ordinary man becomes the host of a variety of monstrous threats that suddenly imbue him with dangerous abilities. Parasyte -the maxim- effectively creates an alien invasion with a species of aliens that infect and eliminate humans in deeply visceral ways. Parasyte accomplishes a difficult task creating a true friendship between Shinichi and his parasitic partner, Migi. The series triumphs, whether it explores sequences of an emotional or explosively violent nature. This is even what it is about in the duality of Shinichi.

2 Deadman Wonderland takes place in a corrupt prison where murder is entertainment

Shiro and Ganta

Deadman wonderland is a crazy animated series which takes place in a vile prison amusement park where the battle between prisoners is treated as entertainment for a group of corrupt authorities. The deadly competitions Ganta is forced to compete in are drenched in blood, but it’s also an anime that starts off casually with the murders of nearly 30 students.

Deadman wonderland only gets more bloody and intense from there. Deadman wonderland is particularly disturbing because of the way it commodifies violence and makes legitimate points about the state of entertainment and corruption around the world.

1 Hellsing makes sure the vampire hunt is as bloody as it gets

There are certain expectations when it comes to particular genres of anime, and any series that revolves around the murder of vampires and other supernatural creatures should deliver some level of carnage. Fortunately, Hellsing and its conclusion OAV monitoring, Ultimate Hellsing, make the grueling war between Van Helsing and Dracula as bloody as it should be. Alucard presents himself as a talented warrior who takes pride in how efficiently he can reduce the living dead into a jumble of limbs. The Hellsing the series are cathartic in how evil is gracefully destroyed.

How long have you been in Austin?

Three and a half years.

Almost at that four-year mark. Do you intend to change it?

I don’t know, I really like it here. I found a groove. I have some nice friends here. And by couple, I mean literally, like maybe three. There are a lot of talented people here, a bunch of talented live musicians. Lots of cool music. The food is amazing. Everything is fine without the governor, but the mayor of Austin is following me on Instagram now so there is no move. Once the mayor follows you, it’s time to stay.

Have you ever been understanding before tackling a new style, or have you always trusted your audience to embrace that change?

Honestly, I don’t know what they’re going to think about it every time. I feel like I have a little idea … For example, if I put out a full EDM album tomorrow, they would probably say ‘what the fuck is this?’ I feel like it varies in a way because I thought “Modern Trash” would hit a lot more than it did, and now I understand why it isn’t. So it’s just something I have to do, it’s a reactionary understanding of what happened. I don’t think I can predict or know what they expect or want.

You must bear the scars of this change. Do you have the impression that modern musicians in general are ready to make this sacrifice?

I think it’s becoming more and more common to change your style, but I feel like a lot of musicians are trying to find other ways of doing it that doesn’t dilute their fan base. For example, Chance the rapper. He has his fan base and his basic style. Even though no one was a huge fan of ‘The Big Day’, it’s still a bit similar to what he did on his first mixtape, but he wanted to do more experimental shit. So he did ‘The Social Experiment’ with his friends and it’s a bit of a different outlet for him to vibrate on stuff that sounds different. So if I ever had to do 180 crazy [degrees] shit, that would probably be through a different name or a different band name or something like that.

I really enjoy your music because most of the time it’s really dancey and super fun to listen to, but you never sacrifice the lyrical and emotional aspect of the music. Is this a balance that you are aware of?

Yes. It’s so hard for me to skimp on lyricism. I think, even on my most cheesy musical journeys, I feel like the lyrics are still there. They make sense and they are very current. One of my favorite things to do is write songs. Writing songs, I think, is an art that not many people vibrate with right now because a lot of music is based on feel, groove and rhythm, which is great. But personally, I feel like when you can nail the two at the same time, that’s where the magic happens. It’s the kind of music that I love. I am also a hip hop fan. I’ll die on a hill on Twitter, chatting with a random anime profile picture about who the greatest rapper is.

You have already said that Royce Da 5’9 is like your favorite lyricist.

He and Lupe are the closest, who are alive and working.

What about the way they put together the words you’re trying to fit into your writing?

I have the impression that they do not compromise on anything. Like, they both use their voices as instruments. They never sound like they’re above or below the beat. They’re still riding on beat and in the pocket, and anything they say is like 10 times what most people could write. I don’t care even if it’s just like guns and shit. We do not care? It’s poetry. The poetic devices and the use of their words are simply beyond me. I feel like everyone can learn, everyone can be inspired by people who are just masters in their craft and I think that’s something that gets lost. A lot of people who are masters at their craft aren’t exactly the greatest, just toning it down and making great songs. But I like to immerse myself in all these hard ass rappers that people don’t listen to. I have a clandestine list of rappers that I far surpass, but who are so much better than me at rap and how I take their influence every day.

I think ‘Mural’ distorts people’s perception of Lupe, because people see him as too forgiving, but he can do a song, he can write a hook.

I don’t think a lot of people want to listen to older rappers. They feel like they want new faces and new brands and things like that. I also feel like Lupe doesn’t really care who is listening to her. He is established and he has done it. Although I still preach his gospel. Every time I talk to someone, I say to myself, “No Lupe is the best.” I did my high school thesis on how Lupe compares to Shakespeare and got a C- [laughs]. They were so crazy.

Video games are another big influence on your music. You use a lot of references and aesthetics on their part. In what ways have games fueled your creativity?

I always like to escape reality in any way I can. In college, I used various other methods that I will not list. But today, as a grown adult with rent and bills to pay, it’s the fastest portal to another world. I love one of the tech frontiers that looks like these little games you can play. I think it’s so cool. I will send screenshots of Red Dead Redemption 2 and they’re like, ‘Is this a movie?’ I’m like ‘No, it’s a game! This is what they did! This is fucking crazy. Being able to explore these worlds we can’t even imagine is such a cool idea. I like games that create worlds for you, like an album that paints a picture or describes a feeling. Games capture that same feeling and immerse you in it. It is one of the few immersive arts in the world. You are you when you play a game, that completes the art. I hope that one day there will be some kind of evolution in music where the audience becomes the other piece. I really want people to be in music like they are in games.

you made a Metroid Prime freestyle lately, what made you want to rap on that soundtrack?

Nintendo never hits with music. You know, every song in every Nintendo game is right on top. Even the music on the Wii menu is crazy. It’s crazy. You can sample any OST from any Nintendo First Party title and it would snap.

The Super Smash Bros. series has been one of your favorites for a while, what has always spoken to you about this series?

Honestly, just blowing up with the homies in the dorm and playing there for eight hours. Over time, I became pious. Then I was like, “I just have to play this game now. This is the only fighting game where you can die falling off the map and it’s fire. It’s incredible. What a cool concept.

Your love for games is evident in all your interactions on social media, how important do you place social media as a promotional tool?

Less and less over the years. I’m starting to make it a billboard or billboard rather than a place to promote my brand. I would prefer it to be just like an art gallery. If I weren’t a musician, I probably wouldn’t have a lot of social media. I’m not a big fan of Tik Tok, nor a big fan of Instagram. The only app I really fuck with is Twitter. I think Twitter is the best self-promotion tool where you can be yourself.

Although you hate it, you have had some success on Tik Tok.

A little, yes, but you have to do it every day to stay in the algorithm. Which, first of all, is fucking obnoxious. No one should post about anything every day, regardless of the purpose. I have the impression that it is unhealthy. Also look at the conversion rate. You could have a million subscribers on Tik Tok and still not be selling a show in LA. I have a million monthly listeners on Spotify and only 34,000 subscribers, which seems slightly off balance to me. But I’m grateful to everyone who follows me and I think the reason more people don’t follow me is because I’m not a social media content machine.

How do you feel about the fan engagement?

Discord. The reason I set it up at the start was because I wanted to try it out. Now this is the place for me to assess who cares. All these people who are active on the server really don’t care. Last night I had a private listening party to the album with all of my Twitch subscribers. I played the album for them in this subscriber-only voice chat. This is where fan engagement suits me, I want it to feel like family and I want it to feel like it’s giving you what you give me. It became such a tight-knit community that people designed EP covers for me. The last EP I did was designed by someone from Discord. All of this, this album would not be possible without them. I talk to them every day, and we hang out and play games every day. That’s where my fan engagement lives right now.

You recently started a podcast and are making vlogging style videos on YouTube. How do these allow you to express yourself differently?

The podcast is so much fun to do. I love to cut it. Me and Harrison [Sands] have known each other for over a decade now. He performs at every show, he does backing vocals on almost every song. So we’re like friends from the first day. I’m not trying to diversify my income, I’m just trying to do some cool shit. The podcast is just the funniest thing. It’s a music and tech podcast. Harrison really loves music and I am obsessed with technology and gadgets. We just go out there and love to talk about all the cool shit that’s going on, act like fucking idiots and play this game called 20 questions where you have 20 questions to guess which musician the other person is thinking of. It’s a blast, man. Vlogging is fun to do because I stream every week. I’m just cutting the gameplay and giving my opinion on the games, that’s exactly what I’m doing anyway. I’m just trying to legitimize my daily activities, I don’t even try to monetize them.

Last question, this is something I knew I had to ask. Who will be this last Smash character?

Dude, that must be the Doom Slayer, but it could be just another fucking Fire Emblem character with big boobs.

With official confirmation that Persona 6 is in development at Atlus, many players are probably looking forward to replaying previous games in the series. However, Atlus didn’t make it easy to revisit the franchise’s first three games, in particular. At the time of writing, the best ways to play all three of these titles are through the PSVita and PS3 stores. A jailbroken PS3 will be able to play all five entries in the series, but gamers shouldn’t have to do so on their system just to have a convenient way to play old games. After seeing the success of the recent Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, Atlus should consider creating its own “legendary edition” with the top three Character securities.

Remaster these old games in the Character would be the perfect aperitif for those waiting for the next game, as well as a great entry point for potential new fans. The fact that each game has its own independent story also means that a player can start with the most recent game and work backwards. It’s a great godsend that similar reissues like Mass Effect: Legendary Edition and Halo: The Master Chief Collection didn’t, as players would be stuck with older graphics and mechanics before progressing. In short, a Character The trilogy would both attract a new audience and generate the most hype for the next one. Persona 6, which could still take years. With how long each game in the series takes to complete, that would give Atlus plenty of time to perfect himself Persona 6.

The remaster season

Cover of the legendary edition of Mass Effect

Overall, most video game remasters are guaranteed to improve on a number of aspects of the original, such as uptime and gameplay. Others may be considered unnecessary in both respects, such as some The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim released. The first three Character games easily fall into the first category, as they are hard to find and could use retouched gameplay and graphics. While Character is no stranger to reissues with added content, like Persona 5 Royal and Persona 4 Gold, Atlus seems to have forgotten the older titles.

Even if Atlus doesn’t make any significant gameplay changes, apply a fresh coat of paint, and release the remasters for Playstation and PC, it would still be a worthwhile effort for the company. Bioware Mass Effect: Legendary Edition made a lot of gameplay and graphical changes to Mass effect 1 and very little in the second and third games, but it was still a very successful outing. Because of Characterturn-based combat, most players would probably be willing to accept minimal changes and a simple HD port. There just has to be a workable way to replay these games.

Old games, new audience

Persona-5-Joker-triple-splash

There is no doubt that Persona 5 was Atlus’ biggest release to date, with each game focused on Phantom Thieves increasing the fan base. Atlus seems to want to keep Character only on PlayStation, which again means the only place to play Persona 5 Royal is on PS4 and PS5. It should be noted that the original Persona 5following, Forwards Persona 5, was released on Playstation, Nintendo Switch and PC. This leads to a strange phenomenon where Switch players can play a sequel to a game that is not available on Switch. In addition, the presence of Persona 5is Joker in Ultimate smash seems to show Atlus’ willingness to bring the Character series to other genres and platforms.

Now that there is a Character title on a console other than PlayStation, there has never been a better time for Atlus to remaster his old titles and bring them to PC and Switch, if not to Xbox as well. This is Atlus’ greatest chance to grow his already faithful Character fanbase to new heights and attract new fans. The Mass Effect: Legendary Edition did it for people whose only experience with the show was Mass Effect: Andromeda, and now the future of sci-fi RPG is brighter than ever. Likewise, reverting to the old titles will make players appreciate these new entries even more.

The fashionable Persona train

Persona 6 25th anniversary

No release date or trailer given for Persona 6, fans probably have at least a year or two to wait before release, barring any major surprises. The series is also celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, with Persona 1 released September 20, 1996. With that date fast approaching, Atlus would be remiss not to mark this date somehow. It could be a trailer, gameplay, or even a song for Persona 6, but on a date that celebrates the start of the series, that would be much more fitting for a remaster announcement. Even a simple remake of the first game (as it’s the 25th anniversary) would do wonders for the voracious community. However, a Mass Effect: Legendary Edition The remastered style of the first three games would obviously be even better.

Such a remaster would be considered a good look for Atlus, as celebrating the big 25th anniversary will surely be significant for some fans. This is especially true when you consider that everything Nintendo has done to Metroidthe 35th anniversary of was sent a tweet. Granted, this series will have a new game in a few months, but Nintendo missed the opportunity to use this anniversary to generate some hype for this release.

Atlus could officially announce Persona 6 as a way to look to the future while acknowledging the past with a remaster of the top three Character Games. This, combined with the fact that there is no workable system for playing these older games, would make a remastered trilogy an easy home run for Atlus; just like the way the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition was a home run for Bioware.

Persona 6 is in development at Atlus Studios.
