FARMVILLE, Virginia – Last season, Longwood’s women’s basketball made history in the Deep South with a record third place finish and 12 league wins. The follow-up in 2021-2022 will provide opportunities for even more milestones with an 18-game format, which the Big South Conference office unveiled on Tuesday afternoon.

After this record breaking performance in the third year under the guidance of the head coach Rebecca Tillett, the Big South portion of Longwood’s upcoming schedule includes nine home games and nine road games with the Lancers facing seven conference opponents twice, and four more once.

This conference schedule brings Longwood’s home game count to 13 games at Willett Hall in 2021-22, adding to a non-conference challenge that includes clashes against Stony Brook (November 12), Duquesne (November 17), Richmond (December 15) and American (December 18).

General admission season tickets for these 13 games are now on sale at www.LongwoodTickets.com.

Longwood’s 18-game Big South slate features home and road clashes against seven league teams – Campbell, Hampton, North Carolina A&T, Presbyterian, UNC Asheville, USC Upstate and Winthrop – and individual competitions against four others – the reigning Big South High Point, Gardner -Webb, Radford and South Charleston champion.

Longwood will tackle that challenge with a lineup that will bring in 92 percent of their points and 89 percent of team minutes from a season ago. Junior guard Kyla mcmakin, two-time All-Big South first team goaltender and 2020 Big South freshman of the year, senior forward Akila Smith, the reigning Big South defensive player of the year and an All-Big South first team selection, and graduate student point guard Tra’Dayja Smith, honorable mention winner All-Big South, titles this deep and talented comeback group. In addition, Tillett and his team have added six newcomers to the fold.

The squad will begin the Deep South roster with back-to-back road tests, starting a pattern that alternates two-game home and road swings through the final week of the regular season. Longwood begins with a trip to new Big South member North Carolina A&T on Wednesday, December 29, followed by a trip to Presbyterian on Saturday, January 1 to celebrate the New Year.

Following their return to Farmville, the Lancers have back-to-back home games, with their home conference opener against UNC Asheville (Wednesday, Jan.5) followed by a game against Winthrop (Saturday, Jan.8). The team then plays four of their next six road games to end January. The stretch begins with trips to Campbell (Tuesday January 11) and Hampton (Saturday January 15) and ends with trips to High Point (Tuesday January 25) and Radford (Saturday January 29) with home games against USC Upstate ( Tuesday January 18) and Gardner-Webb (Saturday January 22) sandwiched in the middle.

After the trip to Radford marks the midpoint of the conference game, Longwood opens February with a two-game homestand, hosting Charleston Southern (Wednesday, February 2) and Campbell (Saturday, February 5). The team then heads to UNC Asheville (Tuesday February 8) and Winthrop (Saturday February 12).

The Lancers end the regular season with three of their last four home games. They host North Carolina A&T (Wednesday February 16) and Presbyterian (Saturday February 19) before a trip to USC Upstate (Wednesday February 23). Longwood will close the regular season at home against foe State Hampton (Saturday, February 26).

Following the end of the regular season, the conference will meet in Charlotte, North Carolina for the 2022 Hercules Tires Big South Women’s Basketball Championship. All four rounds of the tournament will be held at the Bojangles’ Coliseum, with the first round starting March 1. The quarter-finals will take place on March 3, with the semi-finals and finals taking place on March 5 and 6.
