A new PS5 rumor hints at the return of the popular PlayStation franchise

A new rumor associated with the PS5 has announced that Sony will soon be looking to bring back a popular PlayStation franchise from the past. Over the past few years, Sony has not only continued to create new games in a number of long-running franchises (God of War, The Last of Us, Ratchet & Clank), but it has also created brand new IPs ( Horizon Zero Dawn, Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider-Man) as well. And while this strategy will surely continue into the future, it looks like a dormant streak from the past could be revived later in 2022.

This new rumor in question, which comes from @VGnewsinsider on Twitter, claimed that an “extremely popular” PlayStation franchise from the past is set to be announced later this year. Specifically, this reveal would occur in the fourth quarter of 2022 and development of the game would be approximately 70% complete. As for the finer details of the franchise in question that this rumor might be associated with, that’s the big question at this point. In a follow-up a messagethe account that leaked this information indicated that the game may have come from a first-party or third-party studio.

It’s worth pointing out that given the nature of this rumor, you should take what’s been expressed here with a fairly large grain of salt at this time. Even though Sony has shown in recent years that it wants to keep bringing back a popular IP of yesteryear, this rumor, at the moment, is a bit too broad to fully invest your hope. If a major new game for PlayStation 5 does end up being unveiled later in the year, however, we’ll obviously let you know about that news once it’s revealed here on ComicBook.com.

If Sony is set to bring back a dormant PlayStation franchise from the past for PS5, what do you hope this reveal will achieve? Let me know for yourself in the comments or you can message me on Twitter at @MooreMan12.
